Highlights & Curls

It's quite evident that I have a crown of thick tendrils on my head. Add some color to the mix and I'm only asking for some major TLC and maintenance. I did some research to uncover some tips that I'm sharing for simple upkeep of honey/blonde highlights while caring for curly hair.

I've been getting highlights once a year since 2012 and it has never looked as vibrant as it does now. The trick to keeping your highlights as amazing as they were when you stepped out of the salon is the magic potion: purple shampoo. Purple shampoo (which should be a violet color - not light purple) combats brassiness while maintaining the color tone. I use Joico Color Endure Violet Sulfate-Free Shampoo once a week, leaving it on my hair for 3-5 minutes. Follow up with your favorite hydrating conditioner. My go-to is OGX Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil Conditioner, which smells intoxicating, yet leaves your hair silky, shiny and pillow soft.

In between my once-a-week magic potion use, I opt for OGX Sunkissed Blonde Lemon Highlights shampoo, conditioner and oil mist. This trio of hair products enhances your highlights, moisturizes with coconut oil (essential for curls!) and citrus oils, adds shine and decreases frizz.

My hair now:

Before discovering these products my color and condition was going downhill; think Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons. Now I'm hella confident that my highlights will stay vibrant all year long sans damage to my curls. Hope this post was helpful to my fellow curly fries with color-treated hair!
